Choosing the Right Question Type for Your Form
Last updated 2026-08-04
SiliForm's builder has eight block types. Use TextField/TextArea for short vs. long free text, RadioSelect for one choice from a fixed list (with branching and scoring), CheckBox when several answers can be true, StarRating for quick ratings, FileUpload for attachments, and Heading/Paragraph/Section for structure, not data.
- 1
Pick a text type for open-ended answers
Use TextField for a short, single-line answer — a name, email, or job title. Use TextArea when the answer needs more than a line, like feedback or a description.
- 2
Pick a choice type for fixed options
Use RadioSelect when someone should pick exactly one option from a list — it also supports per-option branching (jump to a different section based on the answer) and optional scoring for quizzes. Use CheckBox instead when more than one answer can be true at once.
- 3
Add a rating or a file
Use StarRating for a quick 1-5 satisfaction or quality rating. Use FileUpload when you need an attachment, like a resume — see Add a file upload question for details.
- 4
Add instructions without asking a question
Heading and Paragraph are display-only content blocks, not questions — use them to break up a long form or add instructions between groups of questions.
- 5
Group related questions with a Section
Section blocks group related questions together and structure a form into steps — see How to structure a long form with sections.
Frequently asked questions
- Which question type should I use for a quiz?
- RadioSelect, with scoring enabled so each option carries a point value. See Build a scored quiz or assessment for how scoring works.
- Can any question type be marked required?
- Yes — requiring an answer, and the basic validation available for text answers, works the same way across question types. See Set required fields and basic validation.
